Keep-It-Simple Devo (Wk7/Day4)

Matthew 26:36-39—Jesus went with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with Him, and He began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.” 39 Going a little farther, He fell with His face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” (NIV)

Isn’t it amazing that even Jesus hungered for community in His life when He was suffering? Even God Incarnate–Jesus Himself–intentionally asked people to walk with Him so He might go all the way with His mission. How can you build community like this? How ARE you community like this for someone else?

Jesus personified selflessness to do the Father’s will instead of just acting in His own needs or interests. Why is it so hard to do this?

Father, the irony of reading this passage and then praying alone about it reminds me that I need to be a part of a family. Even YOU needed family to sit with You in Your pain . . . to pray with You in Your pain. Lord, please build Your Family around me and give me a heart to receive Them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
