leadership: the fallacy of red suits and whistles

Just because you own a red swimsuit and a whistle, it doesn’t mean you’re saving lives or even could. Just having the look of a lifeguard (the red suit) or the authority of one (the whistle to blow), it doesn’t mean anyone’s failing to drown around you.  Can you swim?  Can you carry someone else?  Do you care?  Is your only wetness behind the ears?  And can you develop others who care and save, too?  That’s deep-end-of-the-pool leadership.
